Have you read any of Alexander McCall Smith's books? I just finished "The Kalahari Typing School for Men". What a great, heartwarming read. His first book was "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency." I think there were two others between them. I will need to read them all! They are set in Botswana, Africa, and revolve around Mma (Mrs.) Ramotse, the owner of the agency, who besides being a detective, is a businesswoman, confessor, and problem solver. There is a wonderful line in the book "...it is possible to change the world, if one is determined enough, and if one sees with sufficient clarity just what it is that has to be changed." Smith is dealing with people of an earlier era, those who respect the need to make a personal human connection before working through a problem. It reminded my of my time in Saudi Arabia, when I would sit and have tea and chat with someone I needed to deal with. If the personal contact worked, then a problem could be solved. It was something most of the American employees didn't have a clue about. Their idea of solving a problem was to storm about and issue ultimatums. That just didn't work in the Arab world. Probably not anywhere in the world except in the United States.
