I'm halfway through _The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency_, and am as
impressed as much as you seem to be. I don't know, however, if the time is
all that long ago. Mma Ramotse was born in 1958. The book seems to take
place in 1996, thirty years after the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland
became the Republic of Botswana. I think the respect and thoughtfulness of
the people is more the national character of the Botswanians (?), especially
when compared with the "me first" and suit-happy Western nations, among
which the USA is probably the prime example.
I think I will have to spend a lot of the summer with the words of Mr.
Smith, too!
