I, too, decided that this would be the summer I would finally go to Botswana
by way of Alexander McCall Smith. I had heard so many great things about the
books, and seen interesting interviews with the author on television news
magazines. I started No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency when school (and my
graduate seminar) let out June 15. I just picked up the 5th and latest book,
The Full Cupboard of Life, at the bookstore yesterday. The only reason I
haven't read through them faster is that I have to get some work done on my
master's paper!

The reason I enjoy the books are the reasons previously stated: Smith's
commentary about people's relationships with one another. Mma Ramotswe's
view of Botswana, it's people, and it's pace of life give one a lot to think
about while they entertain. IMHO, that's the recipe for a great piece of
fiction.

FYI- in case, like me, you are tea illiterate, and the concept of "bush tea"
begins to drive you nuts, I'll save you trouble of searching out the answer:
it's what we would call rooibos (roy-bus) or red tea. Mma Ramotswe
apparently knows a good beverage, as the antioxidant and other health
benefits of bush tea are quite high, and there are no calories, carbs,
sugars or other nasty things (including caffeine) involved in drinking
several cups a day.

On another note, if you're a fan of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum mystery
novels, I just finished the latest, Ten Big Ones. It's typical of the
others- not likely to win a Pulitzer, but greatly entertaining and well
worth the time spent, especially during summer "downtime".
