"Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" by Dai Sijie is set in revolutionary China. Two young men, the sons of doctors have been sent to a mountain village for "re-education." While there, they find another "re-educatee" who has a treasure trove of banned books. The boys want access to the books. The give and take between the mountain people and the "city" people is one of the essential parts of the books. The mountain people have no knowledge of movies. The city boys are instructed to go to "city" where the movies are shown and come back and re-tell the stories. So much for communistic control. People are people across the globe. In the meantime one of the boys falls in love with daughter of the local tailor. She is the little Chinese seamstress in the story. He tells her stories in order to make her more like him. "Be careful what you wish for" is the theme of this story. I would like to see a followup as to what happened.
