Here are the replies I got for ideas for our studio background. Thanks as
always for your great suggestions!

We have a periwinkle blue upholstery fabric stretched across one wall.
It measures about 5' X 6'. It's stretched on 1" X 2".

Works great and is versatile, shows up all colors extremely well.

When I produced our school's TV magazine show, we solicited old unused
sheets of various hues that no one would ever want to actually put on their
bed. I had an eccentric uncle who had the most weird collection you ever saw
and they sure made for a interesting background!

You can always surf the web for virtual sets. They have a bunch on the web.
That is what I am using right now. I also bought some tapes with computer
animation. That works really great with the chroma key.

There is some information in the archives, too

Instead of spending money on backdrops, you might consider spending a
little more on a video mixer--Videotronics has one that is pretty
reasonably priced. It allows you to pull together several video inputs
as backgrounds, like a picture from a calendar or book displayed on a
video presenter (like an Elmo) is picked up by the mixer and shows up as
the background behind the people talking.

I think they run about $800-900 and if you also get a titlemaker (lets
you type words to appear on the screen) it runs to about $1200.

I don't know what your set up is ...but I bought the blue 4x8 insulation board
(that builders use), covered it with a soft blue fabric. I used a very
inexpensive stretchy fabric and stapled it in place. Three boards covered the
back wall of my studio. We could pin different things up like photos, maps or
posters. They were very portable and we could also change sets by using
different fabric on the back. We actually had 3 different sets and our "studio"
was really a 12x24 storage room. Hope this helps
