Tech: Mavica Camera

I have a Sony Mavica camera.  It was probably the last model made before all
came with a memory stick.  It uses floppy discs, but came with notation "can
use a memory stick adaptor."
           So, for $60 I purchased the memory stick and adaptor and took 70+
photos.  One night I opened and printed a few.  Next morning I attempted to
print the remainder and kept getting an error message of "disk is not
formatted."  I spoke with technician at Sony, who IMO was clueless.  She
said I had lost all photos and needed to reformat.
            I took the memory stick to a local camera shop who was able to
open with no problems and print my photos.
           So, now I want to take camera on vacation.
If I attempt to format the memory stick on the camera, I get an error
message.  When I try to format in my computer, the computer does not
recognize it and keeps telling me to insert the adaptor into drive A. (The
program for the adaptor says 20% done, then a message comes up to insert
adaptor into drive A).
        Any ideas?
Do I need to:
*purchase new memory stick?  (ack, these photos become expensive!)
*take 5,000 floppy disks with me?

I know, I know, I will have to get a different camera.  But, this was gift
from husband, used very little and now this.
