Several times, I've had coworkers and students who proudly announced that their original poetry was "selected" for use by websites that I'd compare to vanity press: the selection process is rapidly followed by offers to purchase products. It is insensitive to address the point after the fact, so I'm thinking of a proactive approach by addressing the issue in group instruction, as part of information literacy or consumer education. The publishing world is facing new competition and has undergone drastic changes, so I am wondering how to explain it all. Perhaps, the outcome would be a mini-lesson similar to comparisons of raw talent, "15 minutes of fame" and the hard work of developing professional level talent? I've seen lessons explaining the process of scientific peer review for professional journals, and there's the concept of authority as it is applied to web evaluation, but does anyone have a "consumer beware" approach to explain different types of publications and markets now available for authors and poets? Recognizing that there's been drastic changes in publishing; is it too harsh to think of these "poetry mills" as a scam? Would it be appropriate to add this style of poetry site to a hoaxes, scams, and urban myths lesson? TIA for comments and suggestions!
