I am always surprised when I hear librarians complaining about how different a film is from the original book. This is nothing unusual. It happens almost every time a popular book is brought to the screen. I think the real surprise is when a film is faithful to the book. That's what my students usually surmise after comparing the book and the video. They learn very quickly that it is not always easy to transfer every experience from the book onto the screen. Time and cost constraints effect the final product especially when dealing with a book that long. We decided to catch HP at a later date and saw Troy instead this weekend. As we were leaving my husband remarked how different the movie was from Homer's epic poem. At that moment the words "inspired by Homer's work" appeared on the screen. That summed up the movie makers' treatment of the poem. No big surprise there. Incidentally the HP film makers have stated that there will only be 5 HP movies made. They are working on HP 4 right now.
