If the research is open ended (i.e. not curriculum related), why not let the kids generate their own topics based on their interests? They may be more motivated and excited to do the research if its something they are particularly interested in. Plus, then it is not just doing research for the sake of research but meeting their personal information needs, one of the Information Power standards.
