2004 WINNER TO BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY
On Wednesday 17 March 2004, this year’s winner of the Astrid Lindgren
Memorial Award will be announced. The award ceremony will take place on
26 May at the Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm.
The jury will hold its final meeting of the season at Astrid Lindgren’s
Centre in
Vimmerby, before announcing the name of this year’s winner at a press
conference. In the meantime, the jury is working its way through the
nominations.
The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the world’s largest prize for
children’s and young people’s literature and was established by the Swedish
Government in 2002. The annual prize of SEK 5 million (equivalent to
approx.
USD 695 000) may be awarded to authors, illustrators and promoters of
reading
whose work reflect the spirit of Astrid Lindgren.
Astrid Lindgren was a strong advocate for children’s rights. The purpose
of the
prize is therefore to strengthen and increase interest in children’s and
young
people’s literature, and on a global level to promote children’s rights.
Last year’s winners were the Austrian author Christine Nöstlinger and
American
author and illustrator Maurice Sendak.
More information on the award and the nomination process can be found at
