I have been asked to find out if there is any "standard" for "acceptable = percentages" of lost books (in a given year vs the total titles in the = collection) in an elementary school library. While I am sure that most = of us would agree that 0% lost would be the ideal, in most of our = situations that's not really feasible... I'm on a committee that's = trying to get some standardization across a number of schools - and get = a sense of when we should really panic - and when we should figure we're = ok vis-a-vis other schools and systems. I searched the archives and found some anecdotal information on lost = book stats, but I didn't find that "magic number" that I was hoping for. = The closest I found was someone who suggested that we should plan to = replace 1 book per student per year due to wear/loss, etc. I did a = general internet search and found some figures for other libraries - = ranging from 5.3% (public) to 2.1% for academic (there was also a = newspaper article detailing a public library with 12% loss... That = seems high to me!). Anyway, your thoughts (and/or ideas for search strategies) would be = welcome. I'd be happy to post a "hit" of anything I find.
