Late last week I shared with these two listserves an injustice that was = taking place in MD. I have been in contact with the person in charge of = certification at the state department. She actually called me at home at = 6:00 on Friday evening. After I explained who I was, what I had been = toldl, and how I felt we had some discussion. A lot of the problem seems = to be the terminology used by the state of MD. She told me that a = "Library Media Specialist" is consider a specialist more in line with an = administrator than a teacher. She said that an LMS must have a Masters = Degree which is what makes them a specialist. I told her that I did not = have a Masters Degree and that I was certified in MD and had been for 21 = years. She looked up my certification and said, "That is because you are = a Library Media Associate, which is in the teacher category not the = specialist category". Somewhere in the legislation the term "Library = Media Specialist" changed it's meaning. She promised to contact the = National Board representative in my county on Monday and sit her = straight. As long as the Library Media Specialist (Associate) does not = have a masters degree they will be considered teachers and can receive = the state stipend. This means they should still be allowed to receive = the county scholarship and stipend too. I can't wait to talk to the = county representative on Monday and see if they have things worked out. = I think I understand what happened, just so this person who is new to = staff development and national boards can understand it too. Thank you = very much for all of the support, kind words, etc. I knew when I was = feeling frustrated about what happened that my colleagues would = understand and help. ------ Diane Mentzer - NBCT Library Media Specialist, Webmaster, Tech Coordinator Paramount Elementary School Hagerstown, MD http://www.alt.wcboe.k12.md.us/mainfold/schoopag/elementary/paramount/ind= ex.html school - mentzdia@wcboe.k12.md.us home - techmom@comcast.net "What can I say?
