Hi! We had a couple Dr. Seuss books in French in the library at Milwaukee Frenc= h Immersion School. I particularly remember Yertle the Turtle. They really = didn't work! When so much of the pleasure comes from the rhymes and the inv= ented vocabulary, there just isn't any way to reproduce the flavor of Dr. S= euss in another language, French anyway. This was also true of some other A= merican classics--Good-Night, Moon comes to mind. It was always interesting= to discover what worked and what didn't and why. For example, since French= color adjectives come after the noun, "one fish, two fish, red fish, blue = fish" becomes "un poisson, deux poissons, poisson rouge, poisson bleu". The= most disappointing experience I had with this phenomenon was with no less = than Madeleine. It is far superior in English, again because of the rhythm = of the language. Don't get me wrong--there are many absolutely wonderful bo= oks for kids published in French with all kinds of delights for the ear and= the eye. I refer here only to the challenge of translating favorites from = one language to another.
