        1. What is the one most important issue facing the school =
technology

        coordinator in our state? =20
        =20
        Money and, by extension, resources. This is followed by clearly
defined =20
        responsibilities and adequate time to do them. =20
        =20
        2. What is the one most important issue facing the library =
media =20
        coordinator in our state? =20
        =20
        This is a knotty problem. LMCs have been =93abused=94 by having =
to do
the =20
        technology leadership and support at their schools and have =
dropped
many =20
        important library media functions as a result. Sadly, this has =
been
done =20
        with the wholehearted sanction of school leadership at both the
school =20
        and district level. As we acquire on site technology =
coordinators,
it =20
        will place LMCs in conflict with the new technology coordinator
UNLESS =20
        the library media person moves into this position. Librarians =
have,
in =20
        many cases, become the superheros of the school=92s technology =

        capabilities. =20
        =20
        Where do we as librarians, stand? Over the last decade, =
librarians
who =20
        filled this dual role have given only a prefunctory glance at =
what
we =20
        were =93supposed=94 to be doing with the NCDPI guidelines and =
did what
had =20
        to be done with the technology instead. Now that relief may be =
at
hand, =20
        we are =93waking up=94 to discover that we are way behind and =
that =20
        information access has been transformed on the side we have
neglected =20
        far too long. So, while being relieved of the technology =
support
burden, =20
        we must step into a catchup role on the library media side. We =
have
new =20
        formats (What do I do with ebooks???)and new information access =
to =20
        address. Worse, we have been asleep at the wheel when it comes =
to =20
        learning how to budget for these things. Only library media
personnel =20
        who have been recently trained have a prayer of being trained =
in
what is =20
        important and how to budget for this so that we adequately =
support
the =20
        curriculum with information access. =20
        =20
        I used to be a high school librarian who emphasized library =
media
skills =20
        instruction for information access way beyond the =93research =
paper=94.
I =20
        have been away from that setting for a decade and I would not =
have a

        clue as to how to start back with skills instruction for high =
school

        students now. Further, I would be able to get few regular high
school =20
        teachers to give up 3 days of instruction in a row for me to =
teach =20
        Special Reference Tools, for example. Most teachers would be =
afraid
of =20
        the impact on their EOGs!! =20
        =20
        3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of =
your =20
        library media program? =20
        =20
        The support of a great principal and a =93can do=94 attitude. =20
        =20
        4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of =
the =20
        technology program in your school? =20
        =20
        The support of a great principal who has embraced technology =
and
sees =20
        its potential in education. =20

1. What is the one, most important, issue facing the school technology =

> coordinator in our state?=20
New Jersey doesn=92 have a position of this sort that I know of. Some =
school

districts seem to think a tech coordinator in their schools mean they =
don=92t

need school librarians. The tech coordinators are ususal computer =
types, =20
not media specialists.=20
> 2. What is the one, most important, issue facing the library media =20
> coordinator =20
> in our state?=20
Neither educational leaders (administrative types) nor legislators =20
understand that technology is the tool of learning=97not the goal.=20
> 3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =
library

> media program?=20
Developing individual relationships with teachers and students, and =20
designing programs, projects, lessons, etc., that are meaningful to =
them.=20
> 4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =20
technology =20
> program in your school?=20
Teachers who are adept in technology often become leaders on the =
faculty. =20
Faculty acceptance of technology, willingness to experiment and seeing =
ways

in which it truly aids the teaching and learning processes led to the =20
successes that were realized.=20

1. What is the one most important issue facing the school technology=20
coordinator in our state? The most important issue is probably the lack =
of=20
sufficient technology dollars for replacing/adding
state-of-the art technology to classrooms. In addition, time is =
another
issue=97
time with students; time to effect repairs and
time to attend conferences and workshops to learn about innovations, =
etc.

2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media =
coordinator

in our state? Media Coordinators likewise need more funding to update =
and
enhance=20
print/non-print materials in aging collections.=20
Also, many systems are choosing to eliminate system level supervisors
because of=20
funding cuts which has serious implications for=20
district programs and professions who need the support and advocacy of =
that=20
person.  =20
3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =
library=20
media program?Good school & community support for media programs has =
been
great! =20
Also, a supportive & knowledgeable Media Supervisor and=20
district commitment to Media has contributed to our success! =20
4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =
technology=20
program in your school? Centralized professional development offerings =
which
focus=20
on school/district initiatives has helped teachers use &
integrate more technology in classroom instruction. Also, programs =
like our

system=92s EnTech, HistoryConnect and Dept. Chairs technology programs =
offer
the=20
training and technology for
participants to take back to schools for use with students and in their =

programs/departments. =20

1. What is the one most important issue facing the school technology=20
coordinator in our state?
Planning, coordinating, and preparing North Carolina students to be
competitive in the age of an=20
evolving interdependent, global, and digital economy.=20
2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media =
coordinator

in our state?
Addressing the literacy needs of an ever-growing and diverse state-wide
student population through=20
adequately planning, coordinating, and collaborating with media =
coordinators
across the state.=20
3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =
library=20
media program?
The one thing that has most contributed to the success of our media =
program
is our media=20
coordinator=92s accessibility and willingness to team with classroom =
teachers
in understanding the true=20
needs within our school.
=20
4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =
technology=20
program in your school?
The one thing that most contributed to the success of our technology =
program
is having a locally=20
funded technology facilitator position. This individual becomes the =
contact
and conduit for technology=20
initiatives within the school as well as teaches students and teachers =
about
changing technology trends.

Funding for the position.=20
2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media =
coordinator
in our state? =20
Having adequate staffing =3D at least one full time librarian and one =
full
time assistant.=20
3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =
library
media program? =20
The implemenation of flexible scheduling. Flexible scheduling has =
allowed me
to expand the library=92s services and my=20
services.
4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =
technology
program in your school? =20
The funding of the new part of the school. Only with the funding of the =
new
part where we able to upgrade our technology=20
to state of the art standards i.e. Smart boards, digital camers, =
digital
camcorders, LCD projectors, new computers, a wireless=20

Hello!=20
1) assuming you mean the central office level Director position.... =
Lack =20
of staff and sufficient funding for infrastructure, necessary bandwidth =
=20
(Internet and WAN) and ongoing maintenance costs (hardware and =

- in that order.=20

1. What is the one most important issue facing the school technology =20

Not enough of them.=20
2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media =
coordinator
in our state? =20
Having to serve the dual roll of both media and technology coordinator =
for
the same school. While trying to do both jobs=20
efficiently, you either run yourself ragged all day, or one job suffers
while you try to do the other. Personally, I spend at=20
least 70 percent of my day dealing with technology issues. Every time I
carve out time to do =91library=92 work, I=92m called=20
away because a printer is jammed, the copier won=92t work, the =
laminator needs
film, a student can=92t log in to the network,=20
etc.  It never fails.
3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =
library =20
media program? =20
Flexible scheduling.=20
4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =
technology
program in your school? =20
What technology program? Our vocational computer lab teacher teaches
keyboarding and that=92s it. It=92s up to the classroom=20
teachers to prepare students for the Computer Skills test in the 8th =
grade,
and they usually have to give up class time or a=20
planning period to do it.
Our school was re-wired last year and that has had an impact. Now every
classroom, including mobile units, have network=20
and internet access. We do our best to keep the most current version =
of the
software we use accessible to teachers.

1. What is the one, most important, issue facing the school technology =

coordinator in our state? The loss of some federal and state grants =
that
were used to maintain and improve our technology=20
(hardware, software, maintenance agreements, etc.)
2. What is the one, most important, issue facing the library media =20
coordinator in our state? Teaching teachers how to collaborate with =
the LMS
and letting them know how the LMS can help=20
with teaching skills to fulfill the state standards
3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =
library =20
media program? Support from my administration to allow me to create and
build a new program that provides for=20
collaboration with teachers to teach skills in context
4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =
technology

program in your school? A grant that pays for a handful of teachers to
become experts with our technology and can then=20
teach their fellow teachers what they want to learn about how to use =
the
computers and other resources with their students. =20
We call this our TILT (Technology Integration Lead Teacher) program. =
The
TILTs and their =93students=94 (fellow teachers)=20
are allowed to work together during the school day because substitutes =
paid
for by the grant are covering their classrooms.

1. What is the one most important issue facing the school technology =20
coordinator in our state? =20
There are so many! =20
It is not having enough people to help train and involve teachers into =
using
technology instructionally. The missing=20
personnel is almost greater than not having hardware and resources.
Another big change is that almost all software is now subscription =
based
rather than installed. This makes sense for the=20
programmers who no longer have to constantly rewrite code to match the
latest OS, but now schools never finish paying for=20
software! Perhaps we never did!
2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media =
coordinator

in our state? =20
In elementary schools it is definitely that they are too frequently =
tied to
a fixed schedule. This is a terrible waste of talent!
3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =
library =20
media program? We are very proud that our media coordinators are =
actively
involved in Project-Based Learning. They act=20
as curriculum leaders in planning and implementing major PBL units.
4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =
technology

program in your school? =20
Again, PBL has had major influence in our program. The technology is =
truly
used as a tool and the focus is on how students=20
learn. We have had Eeva Reader from GLEF and this year we are using =
Intel
Teach to the Future. We feel confident that=20
PBL is a catalyst for change.
