Thank you for all your reponses, Carol Brown East Carolina University browncar@mail.ecu.edu 1. What is the one most important issue facing the school technology =20 coordinator in our state? =20 Security....both desktop and network. With the increase in malicious = code designed to infiltrate desktops, we=92re having to=20 focus our resources on training teachers and staff to safegaurd their hardware and software. At the infrastructure level,=20 we=92re finding that limited staff have a difficult time staying = abreast of antivirus software development changes. Limited=20 financial resources have a severe impact on our ability to provide the proper level of protection needed. 2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media = coordinator in our state? =20 Flex scheduling.=20 3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your = library =20 media program? =20 Dedicated media coordinators willing to adapt to new demands.=20 4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the = technology program in your school? =20 diligence and perseverance=20 Leonard Reaves, Director =20 Technology and Media Services =20 Lenoir County Public Schools =20 ************************************************************************= **** ****** 1. What is the one most important issue facing the school technology =20 coordinator in our state? =20 Answer: Budgets to provide for hardware and people to handle the =20 technical and instructional segments of technology. It is impossible = to =20 get new hardware without the technical support and people for =20 instructing teachers and students.=20 2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media =20 coordinator =20 in our state? Being able to focus on being a media specialist, which =20 includes: 1) previewing, purchasing and processing materials, 2) =20 teaching research skills, and 3) promoting reading for pleasure. This = is a problem because many times I am expected to do all the technology = and media specialist work. Both programs are suffering because my = time, =20 energy and patience is split. We also have problems promoting reading = for pleasure when so much is being done with reading instruction and =20 Accelerated Reader that does not promote pleasure reading. Students = are =20 burning out way too early on reading because of this.=20 3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your =20 library =20 media program? I am on a full flexible schedule and am able to plan =20 appropriate lessons with teachers at the appropriate time in their =20 instruction. Having a flexible schedule does not make my job easier by = =20 any means. It does make the media center and me as the media = specialist =20 function as the hub of the school with resources that promote =20 information literacy, rather than a drop-off/babysitting/planning =20 service for teachers. It has enhanced the opinion of the media center = and its resources.=20 4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the =20 technology =20 program in your school? We are still struggling because 1) the = hardware =20 comes, then there is not software to use on it, 2) they change network = programs and it has global effects that were not well planned out, =20 causing public relations nightmares with the teachers and students and = 3) technical support does not match the hardware purchased. At this =20 time the thing that could best help it would be communication between =20 the district office/teachers/technicians/administrators so there is a =20 clear plan in place that has provided input from all those involved.=20 Martha Hayes ************************************************************************= **** ***** What is the one most important issue facing the school technology coordinator in our state? =20 =20 Money and, by extension, resources. This is followed by clearly defined responsibilities and adequate time to do them. =20 =20 2. What is the one most important issue facing the library media = coordinator in our state? =20 =20 This is a knotty problem. LMCs have been =93abused=94 by having to do = the technology leadership and support at their schools=20 and have dropped many important library media functions as a result. = Sadly, this has been done with the wholehearted=20 sanction of school leadership at both the school and district level. As = we acquire on site technology coordinators, it will=20 place LMCs in conflict with the new technology coordinator UNLESS the library media person moves into this position.=20 Librarians have, in many cases, become the superheros of the school=92s technology capabilities.=20 =20 Where do we as librarians, stand? Over the last decade, librarians who filled this dual role have given only a prefunctory=20 glance at what we were =93supposed=94 to be doing with the NCDPI = guidelines and did what had to be done with the=20 technology instead. Now that relief may be at hand, we are =93waking = up=94 to discover that we are way behind and that=20 information access has been transformed on the side we have neglected = far too long. So, while being relieved of the=20 technology support burden, we must step into a catchup role on the = library media side. We have new formats (What do I do=20 with ebooks???)and new information access to address. Worse, we have = been asleep at the wheel when it comes to learning=20 how to budget for these things. Only library media personnel who have = been recently trained have a prayer of being trained=20 in what is important and how to budget for this so that we adequately support the curriculum with information access.=20 =20 I used to be a high school librarian who emphasized library media = skills instruction for information access way beyond the=20 =93research paper=94. I have been away from that setting for a decade = and I would not have a clue as to how to start back with=20 skills instruction for high school students now. Further, I would be = able to get few regular high school teachers to give up 3=20 days of instruction in a row for me to teach Special Reference Tools, = for example. Most teachers would be afraid of the=20 impact on their EOGs!! =20 3. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of your = library media program? =20 =20 The support of a great principal and a =93can do=94 attitude. =20 =20 4. What one thing has contributed the most to the success of the = technology program in your school? =20 =20 The support of a great principal who has embraced technology and sees = its potential in education. =20 =20 =20 Who says?? =20 =20 Kaye M =93Holli=94 Hollifield =20 yourfavoritelibrarian =20 Pumpkin Center Middle School =20 3980 King Wilkinson Road =20 Lincolnton, NC 28092=20 ************************************************************************= **** ****** I am at the central office level so my answers may be different from =20 those of school personnel. I did forward your request on to our =20 school media people and technology (1) people. =20 1. The most important issue facing the school technology =20 coordinator is funding the position to have a school technology =20 coordinator. Our schools do not have such a person, the media =20 coordinator does double duty. =20 2. The most important issue facing the library media coordinator is =20 =94time=94. The media coordinators are doing library and technology =20 work in most schools. As we use technology more and more, they have =20 to respond to needs to issue it, fix it, demo it, inventory it, =20 etc. This take away time from the other media responsibilities. =20 3. Our principals support their media people in every one of our =20 schools. =20 4. We hired a technology facilitator to work in the elementary =20 schools with some federal money.=20 Also, when the state did away with the 3-5 units of credit for =20 teacher certification renewal, they dealt the technology program a =20 hard blow. It is hard to get teachers to attend staff development =20 training when it is no longer required, but yet we want them to use =20 more technology.=20 Good luck with your survey. I will look forward to your article, =20 and I would like to see your survey results too. =20 June=20 ************************************************************************= **** ***** What is the one most important issue facing the school technology =20 coordinator in our state?=20 NCWISE/funding.=20 2.
