TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS:
For my lower ability sixth and seventh graders, I have bought Dunc and =
Amos books off of used book sites (They are no longer in print) and they =
have like the combination of humor and mystery a lot. =20
Get several copies of the Bluford Series by Anne Schraff and Paul Langan =
from Townsend Press. It is a series of 7 books featuring =
African-American teens, and I cannot keep the books on the shelf. They =
get so worn out from use that I buy about seven sets three to four times =
a year.
They are hi-los, written at about a fourth grade level, but the =
reluctant reader teens love them. I have had parents come up to me and =
tell me how those books turned their child into readers, and the kids =
come in asking for more books like them. =20
Townsend sells them dirt cheap. You can buy an entire set for =
$7--that's right--a buck a book. For 49 bucks you can buy seven =
sets--AND they offer a teaching plan for an in the classroom unit.

We have an annual "Women's Day" to deal with issues and to work on =
community building. One of things that we gave the girls was a copy of =
"The Coldest Winter" by Sister Souljah. This is a book that the English =
Dept. has had on its bookshelves and cannot keep on the shelves. I have =
not read the book, but the English teacher says that she would have some =
concerns about the graphic nature of the book in a regular HS.=20
If some students have been dealing with abuse, America by E.R. Frank, =
though raw in content and language, is excellent. It would be good for =
staff and counselors who work with the students to read it.=20
TESTIMONIALS:
My top suggestion is Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper. (Also the =
sequel Forged by Fire and Darkness Before Dawn--same author) I had a 17 =
year old boy tell me he hadn't read a book since 3rd grade and LOVED =
this.=20
If a student comes in (especially a girl) and says that she doesn't like =
to read, but must get a book, I give her a Sharon M. Draper book and =
inevitably she really enjoys it! =20
