Adam:
I've been covering this on my ResourceShelf.com site. The first records
started to flow into the database in December. I would guesstimate 1/4 of
the total records have been loaded so far.

Yes, it's an interesting and novel idea however finding records can be a
bit difficult for those who are not searching with the word library in the
search string. Even then, it's often hard to find the record especially if
the searcher is doing a subject type search. Yes, this might change and
OCLC warns that this is just a test.

Btw, the average number of search terms used is about 2.8 terms. I think we
would also agree that many searchers don't look beyond the first few
results.

So, yes, the records will be there but if it's buried at #200, does it
really mean anything.

Examples:
Title: You're a good sport, Charlie Brown
A Video

Title Search: You're a good sport, Charlie Brown
Record at #25

search: sports Charlie Brown
Record at #59

search: charlie brown videos
Record not in first 100 results

peanuts charlie brown videos library
Record not in first 100 results
---

Item #2

History of early childhood education
By: V Celia Lascarides; Blythe Simone Farb Hinitz
=95 Publisher: New York : Falmer Press, 2000.

Title Search: History of early childhood education
Not in first 100 results

"History of early childhood education"
Note: Most searchers do not use quotation marks
With quotation marks the book appears at 63.

book about early childhood education
Record not in first 100 results

library books about early childhood education
Record not in first 100 results
---

Finally, I think it's also important that the "average" searcher knows that
1) Not every library is part of the program
2) That it's possible that an item might be in a local library that
the person cannot get access to.
3) That ILL is a possibility but the person might have to wait a few days.

Bottom line: Let's keep watching.

Just my $.02.

Btw, this article from

might also be of interest.
