To follow up on Doug Johnson's message about NECC, I've been attending
NECC for about 15 years and find it one of the most valuable
conferences related to what I do and need to know. I also like the
variety of
people it attracts from teachers to administrators to library media
specialists and technology coordinators, and the exhibits are always
outstanding.

Doug also mentioned ISTE and their new SIGMS
(special interest group for school library media specialists),
I would like to encourage you to join if you are not an
ISTE member (and join SIGMS if you are an ISTE member!)
BTW, one ISTE SIG is included with your membership

SIGMS is only about a year old and already has more members than two
other long-standing ISTE groups. (SIGAdmin is also relatively new,
however, and has twice as many members as SIGMS. Shouldn't there be
at least as many library media specialists as administrators???)

In any case, this is an opportunity for you to help form the new SIG
and make it into an organization that will meet your needs related to
information literacy, NETS skills, and technology while at the same
time having some impact on all the other ISTE SIGS and ISTE members
worldwide. I think after this last year ISTE and its members are
already more aware of the role of the library media specialist because
of the work Sally Brewer, Doug Johnson, David Barr, Jana Knezek, Joyce
Valenza and others have done with the ISTE Leadership symposium, ISTE
publications and other ISTE activities.

BTW, if you ARE an ISTE member, be sure to vote for two of our own LMSs
running for key leadership positions in ISTE: Kathy Schrock and Doug
Johnson. Again, another way to make our voice heard, win friends and
influence people. We need all the friends we can get these days!
You may vote until April 13.
