Dear LM_NET Colleagues,

If you are looking for some summer learning opportunities, here is
something that you might consider:

Study Information Literacy and Web Information Resources, July 2004

Dr. Lesley Farmer and Peter Milbury will team up to teach a pair of
complementary, three unit graduate level courses for school librarians.
The courses will appeal to those wishing to develop information literacy
skills and apply them to the development of high quality Web information
resource collections to support teacher-librarian collaboration and
improve online student learning.

The courses are scheduled on alternating mornings and afternoons, from
July 20 -29, 2004. Some work will occur online, prior to and following the
on-site meetings. The classes are open to all school librarians, as well
as those who are in training to become school librarians. The two courses
MUST be taken as a pair, for a total of six units. Registration opens
April 5.

Dr. Lesley Farmer is Coordinator, Library Media Teacher Program at CSU,
Long Beach; and Peter Milbury is Library Media Teacher at Chico H.S. and
Instructor, Library Media Teacher Program at CSU, Chico. The courses are
offered by the California State University, Chico Center for Regional and
Continuing Education, and will be held on the CSU, Chico campus.

Course titles: Special Topics in Education (EDMA 397C, Sections 11S and
12S).

Here are the course descriptions:

Lesley Farmer's Special Topic:
Literacy Issues in Libraries: Impact of the Digital Age.

This course addresses current literacy issues facing librarians. Each type
of literacy will consider the theoretical underpinnings and context within
education and librarianship, will model best practices in library
settings, and identify possible future directions. Major threads will
include information, technology, reading, media, and visual literacies.
This course emphasizes developing professional knowledge and skills in
understanding the current issues related to the following literacies:
information, reading, technology, visual and media. This includes the
newest advances about learning to teach users how to locate, access,
evaluate and use information and ideas in a variety of formats. The course
will involve limited lecturing; content analysis of readings, online
resources, and AV; case studies; role playing; collaborative class
exercises; literature review and field research; hands-on manipulation of
computer applications; observation; lesson design; oral presentation;
written synthesis and reflective journaling.

Peter Milbury's Special Topic:
Developing Effective Web Collections for Teacher Librarian Collaboration.

This course will focus on using the information and technology of the Web
to collaborate effectively with teachers, and thus support student use of
the library for effective research. Included also will be developing
approaches to incorporating information literacy and problem solving
strategies into your curriculum and library program. The course will have
a practical orientation, with a student "product" required: participants
will gather, select and organize a bookmark collection of school library
Web information resources that complement a K-12 school's curriculum. In
addition participants will gather, select and organize appropriate Web
resources for a classroom activity or lesson. While some of the course
time will be spent in the classroom, most of it will be in the computer
lab, working to develop Web collection strategies and searching through
selected collections of high quality information resources.
