I have always told the various principals that I have worked for that I
would never put a book on the shelf that I wasn't willing to defend. If I
am not comfortable with a book, how can I do a good job defending it when
challenged? Therefore, I probably don't have some books on my shelves that
some of you do. Does that make me right, and you wrong? Of course not.
Every librarian has to make decisions depending on the population she is
serving. I work in a small rural district in central Illinois. This is a
fairly conservative area. I would not consider buying a book with taxpayer
money about a prince choosing a prince for his life's mate. I like my job,
and would like to keep it. I can't see bringing trouble on purpose. Would
I be concerned if my own children read the book? Absolutely not.
We as librarians are forced to make decisions somewhat based on the more
conservative people in our service area. No one is going to come in and
complain that we don't have enough issues of Playboy available for students,
but we sure will get called in if we put something too risque on our
shelves!!!
