In response to the request for research about students reading on the floor, I would look for studies that show how children need transitions and change of place throughout the day. I have taught second grade and I think it is not even reasonable to expect them to sit in one seat for an entire day's worth of lessons. There must be something out there that recommends using different areas of the room throughout the day. I remember this being a very basic idea when I started in the classroom. Look at books that suggest classroom design and how they rationalize the different areas created in elementary classrooms. Sometimes, having the children all on the floor is ideal for a whole group activity as well as small group activities, I can't imagine the problem.
