I agree and support Julie. If books are age appropriate, reviewed well and have content that is needed or useful in your library then it is appropriate for the book to be purchased. I suspect that every community has people with a broad range of ideas, religions, values, ethics, etc. even if they are all not vocal about them. The last 30 years or so have shown us that kids who don't see themselves reflected in the broader society--in advertising, in books, movies, TV, etc. are made to feel less than equal because of that deficit. You never know who you will validate when you provide a broad range of ideas in your collection. And even though I work in a high school, I've been known to have a child or 2 of my own pass through elementary school. Its not the same, but its the best I can do!
