I only got a few responses, but here they are:

My original request:
I have had a request for more information/experiences with
MITINET/marc's MARCmechanic express clean up service. =20
Has anyone used it? What is your opinion?

Responses:
I bought it this year and love it. It is easy to use=20
and has been a big help to me this year. Give it a try!

I have used MARC Magician, but it's software not a service.=20
you have to do the clean up yourself as opposed to sending=20
your data off to them for fixing. At least, that's how it=20
worked a couple of years ago when we bought it in my previous=20
district. It works very well, but can be time consuming if=20
your database is large. I like it so much I'm planning to buy
it to clean up the database in my current school.

(I believe these two responses are referring to the MARC Magician
software, not the service that MITINET provides where you send
your database to them and they clean it up and send it back. LH)

A couple of years ago we had our district database sent to=20
Mechanic for cleanup. They kept the database a year before we=20
could get them to admit that they had not done a district=20
database. They then began to clean up the database one school=20
at a time. Several months passed. We did finally get the whole=20
thing back, but it was still in not very good condition. =20
Now, in their defense--our database was in really bad condition. =20
The librarians had been adding items sometimes with a partial=20
title and no author, etc. Nothing was standardized. But we=20
still have found misspellings and misspellings of things that=20
were spelled right in the first place. Some things were added=20
where they were not to be added. Of course, they have been at=20
this for some time now and very possibly it is much better. =20
I would be interested to hear what someone else might have=20
experienced.
=20
Thanks to everyone who sent me a response! I will have to do=20
some more thinking on this.
