I feel exactly the same way. The same discussion came up over the summer, when the children's librarian at our local public library asked me what I thought of The Sissy Duckling. I haven't bought these books because a) no one has asked for them or for books on the topic and b) I don't want to provoke what I know will be a problem. I excuse it because the public library is just a few blocks away and they do have these books but that is a poor excuse. For us, conservatism isn't an issue - we are 25 miles south of SF and half a block away from a lesbian family who has frequently been in the news recently and flies the rainbow flag. I don't know what the right answer is. I do know that if anyone asks for books on this topic I will not hesitate to buy them, just as I have purchased additional books on various under-represented topics when asked.
