OT- OHIO -elem math skills

Pardon this personal question, but I have a family member who needs to =
know
and since it has been a long time since I have been in the primary =
grades, I
thought I would ask you.

In Ohio (specifically Columbus if possible) when do they start teaching
about multiplication? She has a First Grader who is bright in many ways, =
but
seems terribly confused right now as he said they were doing =
multiplication
and he keeps getting mixed up.  When she tried to help him, he only got =
more
confused. I don't remember multiplication being part of First grade - I
though it started in 2nd or 3rd. =20

So, is this part of First Grade....or is the teacher trying to push a
little. Also, are there any resources that we can use over the summer to
help him. I will be with him a lot and plan to reinforce his reading =
skills
(without making it seem like work), but do not want to make things worse =
by
trying to do Math if his teacher next year will be doing it differently. =
