Many thanks to those who responded to my request for opinions on middle
school (gr 6-8) magazines, especially Seventeen. Of the dozen or so
replies I received, not one was supportive of this publication. Since it
has been my experience, however, that it is usually those critical of
an issue that reply, and also since there was no specific criticism
either, I do not give this result undeserved empahsis.

Over the years it has always been emphasized to me the importance of
considering community standards and the characteristics of one's
clientele when making decisions on what to add to the collection. Based
on that consideration, I visited with two of our guidance counselors
about keeping Seventeen in our collection. These are people who have
genuine rapport with students and their finger on the community pulse.
In both cases they felt our students capable of handling issues
presented in Seventeen and even suggested this is perhaps a better
alternative than some of the information students might find on their
own were it discontinued.

Our students are really into print magazines and use them widely. We
have always tried to cover as many interests and maturity levels as
possible (but appropriate) in our entire collection. If a student feels
uncomfortable with anything they select, then we encourage them to set
it aside and chooose something more appropriate for their situation; we
are always there to help with this.

We are keeping our subscription to Seventeen and will continue to
monitor it.
