Do you know this book?

This is a real long shot....  I have a teacher who saw a review in the
Sunday paper about a book that she wanted to read and she now forgets
the title of the author.  It was something about a man who decides to
retire? or maybe just stop going to work and pretty much become a
recluse.  But people keep arriving at his door and he ends up cooking
for them and getting involved in thier lives.  Does this ring a bell
with anyone?
