Our school is relatively small (450 students) which makes this more
possible, but our Guidance Counselor takes each new student on a tour of =
the
building and introduces them to their teachers, to me, to the assistant
principal, to the cooks, and to anyone else they happen to meet up with =
on
the tour (student body president, random teachers, the custodian, other
students, etc.) I think it helps them feel more welcome. We also have =
very
friendly and gracious students who go out of their way to make a new =
student
comfortable.

We are supposed to wear name badges, but to be honest, I often "forget" =
mine
unless I'm going to be visiting another school in the county.

Okay, I have put in my two cents worth. In business it is now the rule
rather than the exception to have name badges - at least in the Seattle
area. WHy not pitch it as a job skill (wearing the namge badge)?

Also, I had a rather negative and totally preventable experience with a =
kid
a couple years ago. It was May, the kid had just enrolled and didn't =
know
"the rules" and was in the library without a signed planner, etc.... I =
was
not wearing a name badge so the kid also didn't know me from Adam. In =
the
process of trying to figure out his story, I asked him to accompany me =
to
the assistant principal's office and put my hand on his shoulder. I got =
hit
in the shoulder as he recoiled from my friendly hand! If I had had a =
badge
maybe the kid wouldn't have felt it necessary to get himself in that =
kind
of trouble. And, had the admin emailed around his picture with a note
saying - here' so and so - make him feel welcome, maybe I would have =
handled
things differently too!

In our small (270 students) K-8 school, we do not require ID for =
students or
for staff since we have only about 20-25 staff members and we are all =
known
to everyone here. On the other hand, anyone from outside, whether Board
employees, contractors, parents, or visitors, must sign in at the =
security
desk and wear an identifying badge. So far it has worked well for us. =
I
doubt that it would work as well in a larger school but with our little
ones, name badges seem sort of over the top.
