Research shows that poor kids do not have books and do not have the same access to books that other kids do. Cover bar codes or school labels with a sticker that says "Your district name, community literacy project. Please keep this book as long as you are enjoying it, then pass it on." and then place the books at food banks, soup kitchens, the Salvation Army or laundromats etc. Low socio-economic status kids lose reading skill over the summer while higher socio-economic students gain ground. Consider giving them to the poorest school in your district and having kids take an armful home for the summer. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do with old books? They are mostly duplicate copies of picture books written 30-40 years ago, serviceable but not attractive. They have been removed from our catalog and I have offered them to the teachers in the building. Administration has asked if we can come up with a way to donate the books to an organization that may have use for them. Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance.
