MagieMae, I taught music for 16 years in Indianapolis. I thought they were going to do away with it, so at my librarian sister's urging I picked up my library certification. Six years ago, we moved to Connecticut and I had interviews for both positions. I ended up accepting a library position in Cranston, RI - and I've been in love with my job and my schools (s) ever since. Even the fact that my commute is 110 miles round trip doesn't detract from the pleasure I find in this job. Scarey change? Heck yes, but I'm so glad I did it. I have thoroughly enjoyed the discussions and various topics. I currently work as an elementary school reading specialist, a position I have held in the same school for 18 years. I am interviewing in a week for the position of librarian in the same school (700 students K-6, 16 new computers with internet hookup, OPAC, good sized collection). Is there anyone out there who has made a similar move and regretted it? I have lots of control over my schedule now, which I won't have as librarian (we're still in the "library as special class/planning for teachers" era here) but I'm feeling the need for a change after 18 years of the same routine. I'm also stressed by NCLB and the pressures I now work under in reading because of that disastrous law. I know I have a good thing going where I am and I'm frankly a bit scared of the move, but I THINK I really want to try it. Please tell me all the good things about being an elementary school librarian, and warn me about what I may not like! Please reply to my personal email. Thanks SO much!
