I don't entirely agree that kids are plagiarizing because they are under too much pressure to succeed. In my public library, the kids I see practicing all-out copy & paste/transcribing word-for-word text plagiarism are the ones who have no plans to go on to college anyway. They just wait until the last minute to do an assignment, and then just cheat to complete it to "have something to hand in." (The exact words of a young man I took to task for cheating Saturday were, "I just want something to hand in that looks like I actually did something cuz if you just give the teachers something, you at least pass with a C.") Those kids who come in to do real research and actually read the materials from a variety of sources and synthesize the information are the ones who are NOT plagiarizing. These are the kids who have ambition, drive, and ARE being pressured to succeed. What a joy they are! Dawn M.
