GEN: Do you know this book?

I have an adult looking for a book which starts out with a young man visiting
the vet with his very sick cat which is put to sleep.  The man describes the
life leaving the animal.  This is described as being very touching.  There is
a girlfriend or wife in the story.  This is not central to the story, but
starts out the story.  This person had started the book, left it to catch a
train, and always wanted to finish it, but has no idea as to title or author.
Does this ring any bells with anyone?
