Hello, A group is seeking recognition for a black author, Harriet Wilson. Her = novel was entitled Our Nig; or Sketches From the Life of a Free Black = published in 1859. It is believed to be the first novel published in = English by a black woman. It describes a black girl who was beaten and = tortured by her white masters in Milford, New Hampshire. Scholars = believe that her novel was autobiographical. =20 A group of women have started the Harriet Wilson Project to promote the = author and her work. Project Director is JerriAnne Boggis who feels = that the black history of New England needs to be better documented. = "Who does it serve to keep this image of New Hampshire as this bucolic, = all-white rolling hillsides place?" Here is there website URL: http://www.harrietwilsonproject.org/ BTW, if this is the first novel in English, who was the first black = female to publish a novel?
