Hi ... actually, you have a choice of opting out of preapproved credit
offers based on your credit bureau files (Experian and two others) for two
years or forever. The forever choice requires a follow-up by mail, as they
send a form you sign and return. The two years choice you can do on the
phone. But you do have to answer a series of questions on the phone, into
a recorder. THIS IS WORTH DOING. Most people hang up before completing
the process, but it is well worth finishing.
It works like a charm. The flood of those annoying credit card offers
stopped almost 100% for me and for my wife (both of us permanently opted
out). In the bargain, other junk mail may have abated some, but it is hard
to be sure of the cause there.
The number is usually advertised as 1-888-5OPTOUT, which is
1-888-567-8688. The number works for the three major credit bureaus at once.
