Back in the 1970's when I was beginning my career in education, I worked at a
consolidated high school in Kansas. During this time I had a very spiffy car
- 442 Oldsmobile - which was my pride and joy. Being very careful not to
damage it in any way, I always tried to park it somewhere away from the other
cars so that doors would not be opened into it, etc.

This school had very limited parking in front of the school, so most of the
teachers parked in a gravel parking lot on the side of the school. It was
exactly what it sounds like - a gravel lot. Unlike some school districts I've
seen today that have reserve parking places for "Teacher of the Month" etc., this
was nothing but a gravel lot - no painted lines, etc.

Well, one day I made the unthinkable mistake of parking in the space where the
band teacher usually parked his car. How anyone was supposed to know where
this magical space was I'm not sure, other than it was probably closest to the
band room. He went into a tirade in front of students, pronouncing that this
was his space, he always parked in that space, and how dare I park in his
space? I apologized to him and told him I was unaware this was his space and I
would never park in his space again. (Keep in mind - this is a gravel lot!)

Apparently, the students who overheard this tirade decided to take matters
into their own hands and during the night, snuck in and proceded to make sure
that everyone knew where the magical designated space was for the Band King.
They had taken spray paint and painted off the space on the lot, adding wooden
markers, banners, balloons, flags, signs, etc. It was a space fit for
Napolean! I think he got the message...
