This is a long shot, and perhaps someone else knows of something better, but I'd check into some kind of spray paint like from Home Depot or Menard's. I know they come in different "finishes," even kind of a "sand" finish. Only problem is...the whole thing might have to be sprayed so it looks even. Gosh, this sounds really messy.
