When is unauthorised editing appropriate or even acceptable - if at all? How many of us have "skipped over" or substituted words when reading alloud--when the rest was so valuabel but the language of one or two phrases just wasn't a good idea? I can deal with lots more when reading silently, especially if I know there are some kids who will make a fuss or giggle uncontraollably. but that is hardly wholesale editing--is that like a "little white lie?"
