Here is the hit that many of you requested regarding Children's Book Week celebrations. Thanks to all who responded. This is my first year of celebrating CBW, but here are some activities I have planned: * book-related trivia questions * guessing jar of chocolates (best guess gets copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) * reading quotes posted * handing out CBW bookmarks * "Guess Who" display of faculty/staff - photos of them as a baby or child with their favorite book as a child. Students have to guess who the person is Malena Bisanti-Wall Media Specialist We run a "Mystery Museum" with the kids trying to figure out titles of books by looking at visual and verbal clues.- IE mouse, a spool of thread, and a can of soup for "The tale of Despereaux". The verbal clue may be along the line of "This unlikely hero with enormous ears was awarded the Newbery last year!" The kids come in by class and try to figure out all the clues. We have different levels of books and try to include some everyone is familiar with (Holes, Stuart Little, Harry Potter). The kids can share ideas if necessary. We have done this for a couple of years, and the kids all enjoy it. Hope this helps! Betci Weldon LMS Elmwood Elementary School Hopkinton, MA bweldon@hopkinton.k12.ma.us Last year I invited "Mystery Readers" to come to each class and read during their library class. I invited all of our specialist teachers, principal, secretary, school board members, other admininstration, retired teachers etc. It was a big success! This year we are holding a "Book Character Election" in conjunction with CBW and also having a "book party" to unveil all of the new books bought over the summer. Hope this helps! Susan Hanlon K-4 Librarian Northwestern Elementary New Tripoli, PA hanlons@nwlehighsd.org We asked community members, teachers, administrators to come in and read to classes. It went very well. Jeanne Claridge District Media Specialist School District of Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan Lincoln HS LMC 124 School St. Box 308 Alma Center WI 54611 715-964-5311 ext. 210 jeanne_claridge@achm.k12.wi.us Last year I did an idea that I think I saw in Library Sparks: "Look Who Got Caught Reading." I dressed up as Sherlock Holmes and took candid pictures of kids/staff reading. I posted them on the outside of the library wall. Very easy - but so well received. I have not done this before, but this year we are having a Door Decorating Contest - each class will decorate their door to reflect their favourite author or book. Each class will vote on their favourite (cannot vote for their own class door). Winning class will receive a bookmark or pencil from me per student, 3 students will win a book and classroom teacher will win a book for their class. Donna Baker Librarian Clark Blvd PS Brampton, Ontario, Canada baker@sprint.ca We have done fun/dress-up days the last several years and they have been very popular with our students. Days we have done include: Reading is BEARY fun.-students bring teddy bears; You have a bright future. READ-wear sunglasses; Hats off to reading/books-wear hats; Hair-raising reading-wild hair day; Team up with a good book.-wear something from your favorite sport/team; Don't sweat it. READ!-wear sweats, sweatshirts, sweaters; READ IT!-wear clothes with words on it. Friday is always Favorite Book Character Day. Students dress up as their favorite book character. We have a parade in the gym in the afternoon. Students who don't dress up are the audience. Out of a school of 195 students we usually have over 100 students participate. To get away from having Halloween costumes with no connection to a book character students have to carry a copy of the book with the character they are dressed as. Have fun! Theresa Bermingham K-12 Libary/Media Big Piney, WY 83113 tbermingham@bp.k12.wy.us Last year we had a Storybook Character Parade on the Friday of National Children's Book Week. It was very successful and students in all grades K to 5th participated. Last year was my second year at this school and during my first year there, they attempted a Storybook Character Parade at Halloween as they had in the past several years before that. Of course, students tried to force Halloween costumes into it and it wasn't fun. So last year I moved the date to November for National Children's Book Week and created a PowerPoint presentation to show the students examples of students from other schools (pulled from various websites) dressed as characters from books. I used this PowerPoint presentation with them in class the week before the parade. I encouraged homemade "costumes", using clothes/things you already have, thinking about what that character looks like, could you use any props, etc. I also had the teachers tape an i ndex card to the child to identify their character. Students were required to have the book present with them in order to walk in the parade and participate. We had lots of fun and are looking forward to creative costumes this year. Melissa Toner This is the second year with our new principal. She likes to invite guest readers to read aloud to each classroom throughout the week; board members, the supeintendent and vice superintendent of curriculum; the parent club president; and other members of the community, including herself. Both she and i coordinate our efforts to invite readers. She has me do the confirmation and formal scheduling with both the readers and teachers. At the end of the week i do a Book Swap in the Library during lunch recess open to all students who wish to participate. Hope this helps.-Phyllis Libbe CVUSD Stanton Elementary Library K-5 Castro Valley, California Last year I had the GREAT BOOK SWAP when students brought in old books they no longer wanted and at the end of the week they were all displayed and everyone was allowed to come to the library to choose different books. The kids loved it! Cheers - Ingrid Thanks again, Virginia -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
