I'm looking for a new idea for researching poetry/poets,
or, possibly, a research idea for one of the novels we
use in 11th grade. Here's why:

For several years my excellent 11th grade English
teacher has introduced poetry to our juniors--first
by asking them to create their own book of 25 poems
that they like. This means they end up reading quite
a bit of poetry (usually) and gain some knowledge
about poems--style, form, poet, etc.

After discussing many poems in class, the students
each choose a different poet to research. This is
on the "life and work" of the poet--students are
asked to include biographical info on poet, and critical
analysis of at least two of the author's poems.

We're seeing that despite the preparation, many students
still resist writing -- some believe they can't write
their own opinion when they knew nothing about it before
the project..... and despite our instruction, some overdo
the citing, and some abandon it... some love the whole
process, of course.

so we're wondering if it's time to recharge the research with:

1) a new twist or a re-writing of the poetry research idea above;
(we'd like it to be written research, rather than a non-written project)

2) more time spent on research processes of synthesis --getting from the source to
your paper without plagiarizing, or

3) research topics related to literature the students
read in their class:
flowers for algernon
lord of the flies
to kill a mockingbird
hamlet
glass menagerie
death be not proud

Can you help me by sending your thoughts, or ideas that
have worked well for you--for research on poets, or any
of the above novels....or teaching sysnthesis/non-plagiarism?

How do you get and keep your students' interest in poetry?

Yes, I have searched the archives.
