For first time attenders to ALA some helpful hints.
Register for general so that you can attend meetings and exhibits.
Because this is a working conference there won't be a lot of workshops
but there is plenty to be had in way of professional development.
I try to make as many sessions of the ALSC children's notable book
discussions as I can. This is an opportunity to hear a critical
discussion of new children's books, picture books, fiction, non-fiction.
Middle school and highschool librarians won't want to miss Yalsa's best
books and quick pick discussions. These are open meetings and attendees
can wander in and out at will.
Give yourself plenty of time for the exhibits. It was at last midwinter
that I found my cool new furniture for my children's room. I would still
be surrounded by drab tables and black plastic chairs if I hadn't taken
a day to walk up and down the aisles.
I also love sitting in the corner of publishers booths looking over
upcoming titles.

Say hello to strangers. Be brave. Even though it feels like everyone
else knows what they are doing, that's not true.

Think about a service commitment. Go to the all committee meeting for
either ALSC, YALSA or AASL. Walk around a see if there is a connection
or interest in the work the committees are doing. These are open to
members.

The Newbery/Caldecott press conference is not a breakfast but is very
early in the morning. It is on Monday morning at a room in the
convention center. Go early it becomes very crowded. And have fun.
