Ellen touched upon some of the same things I thought about. She did
mention a works cited page. How about knowing about different
formatting styles (MLA, APA, etc.) and that there are handbooks
available with formatting rules and examples? I think that would be
very helpful. Of course, her number 1 rule would be necessary for using
these handbooks.

Subject: [LM_NET] Target: What should college freshmen know

Joni and all...
Having taught research to college freshmen (as I'm sure many of you
have), here's my short list....

1. The ability to read and follow directions. This serves them well
when using any product, as instructions for use are always readily
available. 2. Principles of Boolean logic 3. What a key word is 4.
Basic elements of a bibliographic entry 5. What a bibliography/works
cited/References page is and the ability to create one. 6.
Understanding exactly what type of information they need (which prompts
us to initiate a quality reference interview) 7. Knowing what types of
resources are available in print and electronic formats. 8. The
confidence to ask questions of the resident information professional
(maybe this should be #1??)

Not 10, but these are what I'm coming up with right now. I'm looking
forward to other comments on this. Ellen
