Colleagues:
My name is Jeffrey Hastings and I've been a school library media specialist
in Michigan since 1990 (originally certified in New York) and in education
since '85. I've enjoyed my tenure with my current employer but, this fall,
my district cut half of my support staff hours, impairing both the library
program and, suddenly, my ability to imagine my career going anywhere but
downhill. Things have only gotten worse in the past months: apocalyptic
budget shortfalls are now foreseen and the entire facility seems destined
for the chopping block.

I would love to continue my career with a district that appreciates a
progressive program. Any leads are appeciated.
I would also appreciate hearing from S.L.M.S.s about the fiscal health of
their States, Provinces, or regions and how it is impacting thier
facilities. It seems I hear from librarians all the time who are suddenly
faced with austere circumstances. I want to know about those situations. I'd
also like to know: Where are the healthy school libraries in the world? If
the area in which you do business is alive and well and your school
libraries are in salubrious circumstances as a result, I'd love to hear it.
I could use a little professional hope.
