Many helpful people answered. The basic answer seems to be that while there is only one DVD format, the format includes a "lock" to artificially splinter the market and keep workable DVDs out of countries where the movies are still in theaters. DVD players and discs are not compatible outside of these preset regions. Several people reported failure of getting foreign DVDs to play. A couple of people suggested possible ways around that, most involving playing them through the computer.
