Not quite what you are thinking perhaps but I have to share this: Last
week we had an overnight in the library. It was technically for members
of the Literature Magazine Club (high school level) though it was opened
to all who were interested. We capped it at 25 kids since it was the
first time we'd done it. The kids brought food that had literature
ties, thus "Grapes of Wrath," Meatballs and worms (from The Twits),
cookies (If you give a mouse a cookie), bread and butter (Butter battle
book), Captain Crunch cereal (a student brought in part of a story that
I now forget), etc. Tons of food in the library, breaking all rules!
Everyone took turns reading selections from books, poetry, their own
writing. One student performed a hilarious interpretation of "The walrus
and the carpenter." A teacher brought her guitar and played lullabies,
the headmaster showed up in a tux (on his way home from a formal event)
and read a bedtime story. The kids watched "Finding Forrester." At
bedtime the boys were in Periodicals, girls in Nonfiction, teachers in
Reference. We had a blast - I can't wait to do it again!
