Thank you for the many suggestions I received when I asked for novels that a World
History teacher could use with Special Ed students for medieval times and the
Islamic world (they already use So Far From the Bamboo Grove for WW II). Here are
the suggestions, with reading levels and descriptions.
                                        Reading Level
A Door in the Wall DeAngeli 6.5 Medieval
A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver Konigsburg 7.2
A Single Shard Park 6.7 12th century Korean boy learns
pottery
Catherine, Called Birdy Cushman 13th c. English girl promised in marriage

Crispin: The Cross of Lead Avi 5.3 Feudalism-English peasant revolt
Girl In a Cage Yolen 5.2 Daughter of Robert the Bruce
The Grave Heneghan 5.0 Irish potato famine
Matilda Bone Cushman 6.1 Another medieval girl-lots of medical stuff
Midwife's Apprentice Cushman 6.5 Medieval girl
The Book of the Lion Cadnum 5.2 Squire with Richard Lionheart
The Breadwinner Ellis 6.1 Taliban-era girl disguises herself
as a boy
The second Mrs. Giaconda Konigsburg 7.0 Lots of Leonardo

People also suggested these great ones, but they're American and we're going for
world.

Out of the Dust Hesse 5.6
The Friendship Taylor 4.8

A couple of excellent bibliographies:
World Historical Fiction Guide for Young Adults, by Lee Gordon and Cheryl
Tanaka. Highsmith Press, 1995.

An Annotated Bibliography of Historical Fiction for the Social Studies,
Grades 5 through 12, by Fran Silverblank. Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company,
c. 1992.
