I loved this book and taught it in class! A few things that I did that the
kids loved: Went into the Dept. of Entomology at Iowa State and looked at
insect recipes. The two URLs I used (you'll have to check them--I haven't used
them in 5 years) are: www.uky.edu/agriculture/entomology/ythfacts/entyouth.htm
and www.ent.iastate.edu/misc/insectsasfood.htm Next, I had the students bring
recipes from home that we could modify with insect additions. They could also
search for other recipes online that already had insects as ingredients. Then
we compiled a recipe book for each child. The last day of the novel, I made
"beetle" brownies (minus the insects) and brought them in. With the new laws,
the teacher may not be able to bring in brownies, but he/she might be able to
come up with some other interesting treat. Hope these things help.

, BLT was a Ga. Book Award Nominee back in the 1989-90 school year...my first
year as a media specialist. To intro. the book to 4th-5th graders I purchased
several boxes of Little Debbie snack brownies. I cut each piece into f ourths
and gave each student a piece...making sure each piece had some nuts on top.
Of course you could use homemade brownies...but this was easiest for me.
After I gave the students the brownie...and they finished eating it...I
introduced the book, told a little about it...and then read the chapter that
told about how using "beetles, lightly toasted" as a substitute for nuts, you
could put them on top of brownies. I didn't say anything...just watched for
reactions...and sure enough students began to think about the nuts on top of
the brownies they ate. Some had eyes get as big as silver dollars, some
looked pale...and when someone finally had the never go ask...I told them that
what they ate was really nuts! Several years after doing this, one of the
former 5th graders who by that time had graduated from high school said that
had been his all-time favorite thing in school and still remembered all those
years later.
