Hi folks, I urge you run, not walk, to buy Dr. Stephen Krashen's new second edition of The Power of Reading, Heinemann/Libraries Unlimited, 2004. (Ok, so I am the last person on this list to have read it.) Dr. Krashen, in a readable style, really helps connect the dots between the research about voluntary free reading and improved reading ability AND between voluntary free reading and the importance of available reading materials through all types of libraries. This is a terrific, terrific book to not only read yourself as a library media specialist, but to share with your administrators, reading coordinators, and classroom teachers. It's the most humane (and effective) look at improving reading abilities in ALL children that I have read. I just ordered copies for each of my school libraries and am routing my personal copy to our curriculum director, superintendent, and literacy coordinator (with the really good bits already highlighted).
