Hi! Several responses to my request for Sci Fi
library activities asked me to describe the biography
boxes I am currently having students make in the
library. The final product is a covered shoe or
tissue box that has info about a person on each side.
Here's how I am having the kids do this:

First, I decided what info I wanted the kids to note
while reading (where/when born, childhood info, family
info, major accomplishments, education, items that
would describe the person, adjectives that would
describe the person, date of death), and made a
handout with these questions.

I then read a short biography about Oprah Winfrey to
the class, figuring that everyone knew her. We
completed the handout together. Then I had everyone
take the info from the handout and write it in
narrative form--- 1 or 2 pieces of info to lined paper
cut so it would fit the sides of the box. We covered
one of my boxes with wrapping paper and then glued
some of the narratives to each side.

Then I had the classroom teacher give me a list of the
kids paired up for reading. The teacher paired them
according to ability. I brought in doubles of Adler's
picture book biographies (from the public library),
and had each pair select a biography. The kids are
currently reading the bios during their library time,
completing the handout for their person. Kids who
bring in boxes will make a biography box; kids who do
not bring in a box will make a book with the same info
as the boxes.

The kids are really into this activity! I hope to
display some of the finished products. Oh-- I am
doing this with grades 3 - 5.

Hope this description is clear!
