[LM_NET] TARGET: TECH / OT: Retrieval of missing Outlook Express messages

I hope someone can come to my rescue. My personal and main email account is Outlook 
Express.  Last nite, the program compacted  (archived???)   my "LOCAL FOLDERS" to 
make more room for space. These folders contain saved and organized messages and 
many are from LM NET and my state professional listserv. This morning, I discovered 
the folder is there but the messages are gone !   Not all are gone.   Can someone 
please tell me how and if i can retrieve these messages?   Could I have refused 
this task?  If so I will in the future. How can I avoid this again?

Thanks to anyone who can provide simple, easy steps. ( I need SIMPLE and EASY).
