What about Katherine Paterson's book Angels and Other Strangers? It's a book of short stories she wrote for her husband's Christmas sermon. I am not sure exactly how long it would take to read one aloud, but they are excellent stories. The Gift of the Magi by Carol Heyer. Beautiful illustrations . I do it with my older kids. It's an edited version of O. Henry's. I explain the concept of irony ....they enjoy it. I love the book Red Ranger Came Calling by Berkley Breathed The Christmas Menorahs I love The Christ,as Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate by Janice Cohn. It's a true story (picture book format) about how the people in Billings, Montana joined together to fight a series of hate crimes against a Jewish family. The Light of Christmas by Richard Paul Evans is one that I share with my 6th graders each year. It is beautifully illustrated with a universal message. I'd be comfortable using any of the titles listed: Twas the night b'fore Christmas: an African-American version Rosales, Melodye Christmas in the big house, Christmas in the quarters McKissack, Pat, Night tree Bunting, Eve The year of the perfect Christmas tree Houston, Gloria Baseball bats for Christmas Kusugak, Michael Grandfather's Christmas camp McCutcheon, Marc Apple tree Christmas Noble, Trinka Hakes The trees of the dancing goats Polacco, Patricia Uncle Vova's tree Polacco, Patricia The tree that came to stay Quindlen, Anna Silver packages: an Appalachian Christmas story Rylant, Cynthia The legend of the candy cane Walburg, Lori Angel of Mill Street Weller, Frances Ward The Christmas miracle of Jonathan Toomey Wojciechowski, Susan Hans Christian Andersen's "The Christmas Tree"; I'm not sure if that's the title, but it's the story of a fir tree in the forest who wants to be a Christmas tree, and what happens when he is finally selected. I loved it as a child, and my middle schoolers at my previous job loved it too. You might also want to include a Hanukkah story for your Jewish students. Mine love "Zigazak" by Eric Kimmel, and "Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins", also by Eric Kimmel. And don't forget Kwanzaa! :) How about The Gift of the Magi? Thanks for all the input!
